Jubilation for shoppers at Junk Jubilee

November 2021

Called the “ultimate vintage experience,” Junk Jubilee Jingles is a family affair that will bring a smile to the faces of treasure hunters this holiday season.

Set for Nov. 12-14 in Des Moines, founder and owner Miccia Humphrey calls the event a “fantastic place to find someone a special gift.” Humphrey founded the event in 2010 and has the good fortune of having help from her son Sam, nephew Seth and his wife Sara in staffing it. The jubilee specializes in antiques, retro/vintage items; in addition to the winter event, another jubilee is held annually in the spring.

“Don’t wait to buy last-minute gift cards when you can buy a meaningful or whimsical gift that is a one-of-a-kind item brought to the show by a small business owner,” Humphrey writes on Junk Jubilee’s website. “While you may find some vintage Christmas items, the majority of items are just great finds. Many vendors like to decorate their booths for the holiday season, and the show is very festive.”

Junk Jubilee Jingles will take place in the 4-H Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds – that’s 110,000 square feet with more than 100 vendors from surrounding states.

All Hallows’ event sure to serve up spooky good time

All Hallows’ event sure to serve up spooky good time

October 2021

History will come alive – along with a few ghouls and zombies – at Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer’s All Hallows’ event, Oct. 8-9 in Grand Island.

Visitors will start their evening with frightful scenes in the museum’s family arbor, where kids will receive a bag full of candy and coupons from local businesses. Then, it’s off to Railroad Town, an historic town on the museum’s grounds, which recreates the lives of everyday citizens in 1891, including farmers, blacksmiths and tinsmiths. Catch a ghost story or two in front of the Lesher House, and then participate in a costume parade as it winds its way through Railroad Town.
The museum is promoting the event as suitable for younger children.

Stuhr Musuem is located at 3133 W. U.S. Highway 34. For more information, call 308-385-5316 or visit www.stuhrmuseum.org.

Event marks Santa Fe Trail’s 200th anniversary

The small town of Council Grove is getting ready for a big party to celebrate the Santa Fe Trail’s 200th anniversary as a major route for trade in the 19th century.

The Rendezvous at Council Grove, scheduled for Sept. 17-19, will feature a host of activities designed to highlight life and historical events that would shape the history of the trial since 1821. A pageant sponsored by local group Voices of the Wind, made up of Konza Indians from the Kaw Nation, will “depict the changes affected by two vastly different cultures.

As the Kaw Indians were being relocated and European American settlers were beginning to populate Council Grove on the Santa Fe Trail, the dynamics of these two cultures co-existing proved to be intense,” according to the group’s website. The rendezvous also will include a mountain man exposition, an antique wagon show, and blacksmithing demonstrations.

The Voices of the Wind performances take place in the old Neosho riverbed near historic downtown Council Grove and adjacent to the Santa Fe Trail crossing on the Neosho River. The production incorporates historic photos, images of the prairie landscape, and video images with the live-action of a pack train, wagon train, stagecoach, riders on horseback, tepees and the campfire of a Kanza village, according to event co-organizer Diane Griz.
